Job Description

Wirecutter, the product-review site owned by The New York Times Company, is seeking an experienced writer to contribute to its coverage of networking and personal information security products.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of networking technology and terminology, experience with hands-on testing, and familiarity with the latest trends in home networking and information security. Most important, however, is a keen awareness of the place these products have in the everyday lives of people who aren't networking experts or tech enthusiasts, who just want a good, secure home network without dead spots that they don't have to micromanage or spend hours configuring and keeping safe.

You'll work with Wirecutter's computing and networking editors to test products, write reviews, buying guides, and how-tos, and build out and maintain our networking and information security coverage.

We are a remote team that meets regularly on video and Slack. We have offices in New York City and Los Angeles for employees who reside in those cities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years experience writing and editing for a major publication, including coverage of technology products, preferably in a Web environment.

  • Hands-on experience with current networking gear, including modems, routers, mesh networking kits, network-attached storage devices, and Wi-Fi adapters. Smart home experience is a bonus.

  • Understanding of computing and networking terms: the ideal candidate doesn't have to be a sysadmin but should be knowledgeable enough to set up and test home networking devices.

  • Understanding of basic personal and home information security: how to secure a router, back up a computer, manage passwords, and avoid phishing and ransomware attacks.

  • Excellent communication and time management skills in a remote work environment

  • The ability to write clean, accurate, and accessible prose for a general audience.

  • Ability to think creatively about tests.

  • For remote applicants, access to adequate testing facilities. You don't need a professional lab, but real-world space (like a house or large apartment) is needed for real-world testing.
